Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the squad's 10-match winless beginning to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have previous links to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the process of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
