Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.
He commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the potential of the organization, and anticipate tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who previously headed Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The newly public communications demonstrated that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the technology organization said it accepted the economist's decision to step down.
"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI commented.
Political Context
This development arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on this week to pass a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then proceed to the office of the White House for signature. He has indicated he plans to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the subject following pushback from his base.
Message Details
A collection of Epstein-related emails released by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.
The messages showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to introduce the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were shared with the wider community, the former official stated he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to restore faith and fix relationships with the people most important to me".
Professional History
Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led the institution from five years and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in DC where he was a researcher, announced that he was not affiliated with the group.
He became part of the board of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO the company leader.
