A major tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
